about

from the Chandler Travis Philharmonic album "Llama Rhymes" (2002)

We had a few black dogs who could've inspired this one: Desi, Turbo, and Bodie being the prime culprits, but I think it might've been Desi.

from Sept. 26, 2002 - “Mothra” - This is the song on the album that makes me the happiest, in part because it’s just so damn noisy and large and because I get to imitate David Bowie. It all started one night a few years ago at the Kirkland when I tried to start “Crab Napkin” but then couldn’t remember how it went and played the riff for “Mothra” by mistake. There’s about twelve horns on it, and I love how they sound, especially on the bridges -reminds me a little of “Tusk.” This one was very easy and very fun -another live vocal, I believe.

The lyric is a tribute to a flat-coated retriever named Desi (also the subject of “Get Out of Here, You Big Black Dog”) who had died not long before the song was written, making it one of many dog songs -hopefully, someday we’ll do an all-dog album!

lyrics

“Mothra”

So musty, so old, so vague in your appeal
Your funky lip
You were a man’s moth
And the world was your teddy

He had great big head and empathetic eyes
Your funky lip
Hangin’ down
And you were right on time
And the world was your teddy

So relentless, so romantic was your nature
So steady, so pathetic your gaze
So radioactive was your breath, you scared us all to death
It’s always hard to lose someone you’re close to

Mothra

O moth of my approval, where art thou?
Give me give me all your love
I need it right now

Mothra
