Let's not mince words: Pete Labonne is a genius, and my favorite kind of genius at that- cracked. He's the abominable snowman of rock 'n' roll.

Sonic Trout released a compilation of his work in 2001, and it remains the only Sonic Trout release that we had nothing to do with recording or producing; Pete did that all himself so well that we just had to put it out, even though we had nothing to do with it. And of course it disappeared for another decade-plus, except for the rabid Pete fans among us who still perform and circulate his amazing songs, and for the author himself, still gleefully at large, but extremely well hidden.

Pete has been compared to Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, and the Shaggs, not because he sounds like them at all, but because of his stunning, jaw-dropping originality. Pete worked some with Alex Chilton, Richard Hell and Earl King back in the day, and you can hear those elements in his sound, but lyrically, he's in his own hilarious, remarkable world. These songs, compiled from years of rough-hewn cassettes recorded in isolation out in the woods of upstate New York, represent the cream of a couple of decades worth of soulful recklessness, a not-so-distant gonzo cousin to Dylan and the Band's basement tapes. It's practically enough to revive the word “awesome”!
